Who I work with
I work with people navigating identity, relationships, and the lingering effects of trauma. I also work well with people who are highly sensitive, or have had to shape themselves into roles that don’t quite fit to feel safe or successful. I especially enjoy working with LGBTQ+ clients (I’m queer myself) and those interested in exploring attachment, people-pleasing, anxiety, life transitions, authenticity, shame, and loneliness. I’m a good fit for people seeking long-term work that addresses root causes rather than surface-level symptom relief. Some who seek my services are feeling a more pressing need for help, and others are simply curious about how getting to know themselves more deeply can make life more meaningful and enjoyable.
Approach
I practice from a relational and psychodynamic lens. From this approach, the relationship between you and I is the main way that we learn about, and eventually reshape the way you relate to yourself and your relationships outside the therapy room. We are often both harmed and healed in the context of relationships. Psychodynamic therapy holds a curiosity for how your early experiences and relationships unconsciously inform your way of seeing the world and moving through it. While we can’t manipulate the past, we can gradually shift the way you understand and relate to it in the “here and now” so that it doesn’t continue to keep you from having the life and relationships you want to have.
Therapy is a collaborative and creative process in which we work together to untangle difficult feelings and relationships in your life. Healing happens on a whole-body level; we’ll tend to both your thinking mind and your embodied, emotional self. In sessions, we have space to explore your feelings about the everyday things, life’s big questions, and the more difficult things that may be causing you to seek help. As the therapist, I will primarily listen deeply and respond to you, rather than drive our conversation myself. I may make observations, ask you questions, or slow us down to notice a particular emotion arising or a dynamic transpiring between us. I aim to foster a safe-enough space for you to feel comfortable to speak freely and be curious together about what comes up. Over time, remarkable change can happen when we attend closely to the parts of yourself and your story that may not have adequate space to emerge in the rest of your life.
This type of therapy is best-suited for people who want help with more chronic difficulties with self-esteem, relationships, or issues that seem to recur despite repeated efforts to change. As with any process that facilitates deep and lasting change, one must be willing to experience a bit of disruption and uncertainty in the process.
